Dan’s Fly Shop, Since 1960
Our story began with Dan Hall, who discovered his passion for fly fishing while helping his parents at Pleasant View Resort in the 1950s. Dan spent all of his free time exploring the mountains in pursuit of trout on his hand-tied flies. It wasn’t long before he began taking guests out on his fishing adventures, and in 1960, “Dan’s Fly Shop” was officially established. Dan, along with his wonderful wife Marian, moved the shop to its current location in 1984, where it became a hub for anglers and a place where generations of fishermen have returned to see a friendly face and receive the best local flies and expert knowledge.

Guiding for Over 20 Years
Mitchell and Krystal Murphy proudly carry on this legacy. With deep roots in the local community, Mitchell grew up with a rod in hand and began his own fly fishing journey while working at his family’s Lake View Lodge and Resort teaching fly tying and casting lessons for Elderhostel groups. At 16, he began working for Dan as a guide and has been in the profession for over 20 years, including running his own guiding company in Saint Petersburg, Florida, chasing Snook and Tarpon!
A Family Business
Mitchell and Krystal’s journey together blossomed amid their shared passion for fishing and the outdoors, having met through a fishing tournament in Texas and getting engaged in Lake City on the Lake Fork River while fly fishing. Now, alongside their son Mason, they are committed to ensuring that Dan’s Fly Shop remains a cherished staple in the community for generations to come.

As a local staple since 1960, we are committed to serving our community. We host free fly casting & entomology classes weekly and support local events such as the 4th of July celebration, Music and Wine festival, Bingo nights, the local movie theatre and more. This year, we are thrilled to bring the F3T Fly Fishing Film Festival to Lake City, with hopes of making it an annual event.

We offer a wide range of products, from top-quality fly fishing equipment, clothing, & accessories – including brands like Sage, Umpqua, Filson, Columbia, & Scientific Anglers – to the largest selection of fishing flies in Hinsdale County. Our shop is proud to provide full-service custom rod building & repair, along with unique custom fly-tying opportunities to create something special for your next adventure on the water. We provide equipment rentals, including rods, reels, waders, and vests.
Fishing Guide Services
Our pro fishing guide services include an Outfitter’s License with permit days ranging from the Taylor Reservoir to the Rio Grande, allowing us to offer guided trips on all of the major trout rivers, streams, and lakes in the area. Whether you’re looking for a full or half-day trip, public or private water, or even a multi-day package, we tailor each experience to meet your specific preferences and skill levels.
